Rhododendron 'Kārlis'

'Kārlis' is another of Professor Kondratovičs’ selections, also based on seed from open pollinated R. catawbiense, introduced in 1957. Like ‘Irina’, the flowers are violet-red in June. Again, 'Kārlis' is a new introduction to Finland but experience so far has been favourable.

'Kārlis' can reach about 1.5m in ten years but at Mustila, like many other R. catawbiense cultivars, it remains lower. Snow depresses the branches and the shrub looks sparse. On the other hand, the snow also offers protection so this variety winters well and flowers blamelessly, usually every other year.
