'Sprīdītis' is one of the selections by Prof. Rihards Kondratovičs from open pollinated seedlings of Catawba rhododendron (R. catawbiense), from 1957. The hybrid flowers with abundant pale violet blossoms in June. There has so far been limited experience of the hybrid in Finland but it might be expected to be similar in habit and hardiness to its parent R. catawbiense.
'Sprīdītis' grows densely to about 1.5 metres in ten years. At Mustila it is pressed low to the ground by snow cover every winter, and has grown to only about one metre, with sparse foliage, but it flowers well, usually every other year.
