'Lavanda' or 'Babites Lavanda' is one of the hybrids named by Professor Rihards Kondratovičs in Latvia, a 1965 selection from seedlings of a open pollinated Catawba Rhododendron (R.catawbiense). The flowers open light purple in June.
This hybrid has been little tried in Finland but has so far shown itself to be the best of the Latvian rhododendrons at Mustila. It is leafier than the other hybrids and also sturdier; the large almost lavender blue blossoms have wavy-edged petals, and appear in full trusses.
'Babites Lavanda' grows to about 1.5m in 10 years. At Mustila it has reached only about 1 metre. It is about as hardy as the parent R. catawbiense.
